KII

KENYA

The Kii Factory was established in 1965 at the foot of Mount Kenya. Today it is managed by the Rungeto Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which has been supporting coffee production in the region since 1995. The factory is named after the nearby Kii River, whose cold, fast-flowing waters are used in coffee processing.

The production area, Kirinyaga County, lies on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. It is a fertile region where coffee and a wide variety of crops are cultivated, and this rich environment provides the foundation for producing exceptional quality coffee.

At Kii Factory, only fully ripe cherries are carefully hand-picked. After depulping, the beans undergo overnight fermentation to remove mucilage. They are then washed and graded in clean, fresh water before being dried slowly on African raised beds for 8 to 14 days.

The factory also focuses on sustainable practices, such as reusing water resources and turning discarded coffee pulp into fertilizer, thereby reducing environmental impact. Each stage of sorting and processing is carried out with an understanding that it directly affects cup quality, ensuring consistently meticulous production.
